Wilkins Avenue Women's Shelters (Sophia House and Community Based Shelter)
Sophia House is a 30-bed short-term emergency shelter for homeless women who struggle with issues related to mental illness, substance abuse, trauma and long-term disabilities. The Case Manager at Sophia House provides a clinical assessment and helps the women connect appropriately with housing, medical, mental health and social services that enable them to work towards recovery and self-sufficiency. Over 150 women are served here each year.
The Community Based Shelter (CBS) provides transitional housing in a shelter environment for single adult women already committed to changing their lives with the support of mental health, medical, and therapeutic programs. Many residents are involved in education and job training programs, or may indeed have jobs. CBS provides the case management structure necessary to help residents recover and move to permanent housing. This 30-bed facility serves close to 80 women annually.
